Swift – A new programming language

I wanted to create an iOS app which I have described in this post. Being a C# programer, it was so hard to learn Objective C, especially with the unusual syntax.

Look at what it takes to create an instance of a class in Objective-C.

ClassName *instanceName = [[ClassName  alloc]  init];

Seriously? Allocate and Initialize? Do I need to tell each and everything to it? There are too many square brackets to deal with.

Unlike me, my wife was so comfortable and picked it up real quick. She laughs at me when I complain!!

Luckily, in a month, Apple had announced its new programing language Swift for iOS and OS X. I felt like Apple heard me 😉

It is a developer friendly language and let programmers focus on logic than complex syntax.

Now look at how to instantiate a class in Swift…

var instanceName = ClassName()

No semicolons required at end of each line 🙂 It is simple and easy to code. Learn more about Apple’s Swift from their website.

The New iPad

Apple has revealed its next iPad. While we were expecting the iPad3, apple has named it as just ‘The New iPad’.

By watching the 1.5 hour keynote from their website, I understood that it does not have a revolutionary factor. Of course, we cannot expect a major change or innovation from every apple product release 🙂  Still it has some interesting features.

Retina display:

iPad comes with the Retina display and Apple calls its as Resolutionary. 🙂 Yes!! The display would be stunning with 2048*1536 resolution. The question is, is it really required to bring those many pixels to a 9.7-inch display?

A5 X Chip:

The processor is really faster than the older one. Of course, every new product would have the new advanced processor than the previous. So this is not a jaw-dropping feature.

iSight 5 MP camera and HD recording:

The rear camera is now 5 Mega Pixel. Apple says that it comes with advanced optics. HD video recording is possible with auto stabilization. Holding the iPad firmly and shooting videos is bit hard due to its flat shape. So bringing in the video stabilization feature makes sense.

Voice dictation:

It is just Voice dictation that translates the voice to texts.The software does not type in a comma and full stops unless you specifically say ‘Period’ and ‘Comma’ in between the sentances. Unavailability of Siri is a big disappointment. Apple might have thought that iPhone’s sale would come down if it includes those features in iPad.  🙂

4G LTE:

iPad now supports 4G LTE. 4th generation networks are really faster than 3G. That’s a good feature for the people who live in the country that has 4G networks. In India, we are still not using the 3G networks due to its costs. 🙂

Apps from Apple:

Updated apps like iMovie and Garageband are interesting and good to have with this new iPad. The best part is the inclusion of iPhoto of iLife family. It looks great and editing becomes simply easy with a couple of touches.

Apple confirmed iPad’s release on March 16 in the US and few countries. Rest of the countries will have it on March 23 but India is nowhere in any of the lists.

That is all about The New iPad. When I go to the United States I would definitely buy an iPad. 🙂

R.I.P Steve Jobs

Today morning I got a call from my friend saying ‘Steve Jobs died’. I immediately got up from my bed and switched on my PC to check the news and this is what I saw in Apple.com.

It’s really sad news for me and for those who were inspired and touched by his Innovation and Creativity.

My hearty condolences to his family,friends and the employees of Apple.

I would like to post the speech he gave in 2005 at Stanford University.

“Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything—all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure—these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma—which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice.”

Steve Jobs steps down

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

The great innovator Steve Jobs has resigned as CEO of Apple. He is one of my inspirations in life for innovation. It’s a sad news that he has stepped down. Apple still can continue without him and reach new heights, but will there be any innovation and great design?

My first Apple product that I own was a 3rd generation iPod Nano. When I bought that, I was fantasized by the User Interface and the design especially the Thumb Wheel. It saved my thumb from hell lot of clicks 🙂

All their products aren’t affordable that I couldn’t buy anything other than the iPod 🙂 but still I keep checking their site for the news and fall in love with all new Apple products.

Currently I’m reading a book about him – Inside Steve’s brain. I am yet to complete the book and hearing his resignation news today is just sad.

I always remember Steve Jobs for the following.

  • He was dropped out of college.
  • Introducing the first home computer with a GUI
  • Resigned Apple and founded NeXT
  • Pixar Animation Studios
  • He recruited John Sculley (Pepsi Co CEO) by asking him  “Do
    you want to sell sugar water for the rest of your life, or do you want to come
    with me and change the world”
  • Creation of Mac OS, iPod, iPhone, iPad
  • His Black Turtle-neck T shirt and Blue jean.

There is lot more to say but I will end my post here as I have my Algorithm arrears exam tomorrow morning 🙂

Hello Steve jobs, What is Face Time ?

Last week Steve jobs introduced iPhone 4.

The best part of iPhone4 is Face Time, Yes, that is what Steve jobs and every one is saying.

But I have no idea how this face time works.

If it uses WIFI, it requires an internet connection, then how come it is new to world, we already have Skype and Fring Video calling that works like charm using internet. How does this Face Time differ from Skype?

Quite confusing, isn’t. Let us see what Steve Jobs tells about it.
