Chennai to Cincinnati

It’s has been a long time since my last post. What was I’m doing on earth without being online?

I was up in the air,

Miles away from home,

Out of my comfort zone.

My Onsite travel was confirmed and i’m supposed to report Cincinnati office on April 17 2012.

I was terribly busy last week and was sick as well(102 degrees, fever). In the same week, I had spent till my credit card limit for shopping and now I’m broke 🙂

My ticket to Cincinnati, Ohio was confirmed just a day before my travel. My flight was on a Sunday night.

I had to catch three flights: Chennai – Dubai – Dallas – Cincinnati. The travel was unpleasant as I wasn’t feeling well.

Here we go…The journey to the US.

Chennai, India – Sunday night:

My mom, bro and my cousin Raj and few relatives came to the Airport to send me off. I waived bye to all and went to get my boarding passes while my family waited inside the airport. I straight away went to immigration where i was not allowed to go back to the waiting room. So I just called them and said bye. My mom instructed me to call whenever possible. I said yes moved forward.

After the security check, I had 45 minutes of waiting time and called few of my friends. I have not informed most of my friends about my travel. I have not called them even in the airport, I felt tired and just sat idle.

Chennai to Dubai:

I sat between a tamil guy and a foreigner. The tamil guy spoke well since we are from the same place. We talked a lot. he talked more about G Force, turbulence etc and sounded like an IIT student, but he is not  :D. He also advised me to drink rum and few hot drinks to get rid of cold and fever 🙂 and continued his drink when I said no.

We reached Dubai 30 minutes late. The airport was beautiful and he took photos and videos. I said bye and started moving towards my gate.

Dubai to Dallas:

I was ok till I went in to the flight, but my body temperature raised high in few hours and I fell sick again. I covered my head and slept. when I got up I felt better. I switched on the display and tuned to Air show which shows the location of the flight. I was shocked, It just moved an inch from Dubai. I still have 12+ hours of travel. I drank a lot of hot tea which I’m not used to.I watched movies and slept in all different dimensions. Finally I reached Dallas after an awful 15+ hour journey.

I landed in the US.

The first place I visited in the US is Rest room and the first thing I did was Vomit.

That’s a great way to start right 🙂

Dallas Airport:

My next flight to Cincinnati is after 8 hours.

I waited in a long queue for immigration. I was very tired and even thought of siting on a wheel chair 🙂

I dropped my documents several time while waiting in the line. People looked at me as if I am drunk.

I finally appeared before the immigration officer and got my I-94 stamped on my passport.

Then I took the skylink – train to my terminal. Now I still felt sick and cold. I bought a doughnut to eat and could not finish it. It tasted so bad. I wanted to talk to my mom. I was not able to use my indian sim card here so I purchased a prepaid calling card for 20$, but was not sure how to call :).

I found an old guy standing at the help desk. He looked like James bond wearing a tuxedo hat. I approached him and enquired about my flight. I also asked him on how to make a call with the card I have purchased. He was not sure about that too. So he gave his cell phone to make a call.

I did not want to make a call to india from his cell so I just called my colleague and informed that I have arrived Dallas and will be in Cincinnati around 9 pm.

Then I roamed through the terminal to buy a Hoodie. I found a shop and the girl inside the shop looked beautiful, she looked like an indian but sounded like an american. I went inside to buy the Hoodie. It was imprinted with the words TEXAS,Dallas and USA.

I did not take any photos during my travel. So I'm posting the one that I took today 🙂

I wanted to try it and approached the girl. She asked me to try right there over my T-shirt and to check the mirror. I liked it and bought it for 22 dollars. I also asked her about the recharge card and she explained me well. Then she asked where I’m from India? I said, I’m from TamilNadu. She smiled and told me that her origin is Kerala and her husband is a keralite too.

My guess was correct 🙂 But she’s married 😦

I moved out of the shop and still 5 hours left. I found a place to sit and fell asleep. I did not care about my luggage. I slept like a monster and got up just 30 minutes before my flight depart time.

I ran to the help desk and they wanted me to go to another gate.

Dallas to Cincinnati:

I boarded in to the flight and it was a short journey. I finally landed in Cincinnati and called my colleague niraj from the pubic phone. He said he will reach in 15 minutes and wanted me to call him again.

I waited near the exit. A man was busy with his laptop and smiled at me when I saw him. I then went back to the public phone to call my colleague, but I did not have enough coins to make a call.

The man saw me and asked ‘Do you want to make a call with my iPhone’ I wondered why people say iPhone instead of just Phone? I said yes and he dialed the number from his phone sorry iPhone 🙂

After the call, I thanked him for his generosity. He asked me which is the largest city in India. I was not sure, but I said Mumbai. He smiled and welcomed me to Cincinnati. He is a gentle man. My colleague Niraj came in few minutes and picked me up. I first wanted his phone to call my MOM. he said its unlimited to India so you can make any number of calls. I just grabbed and called my MOM and informed about my arrival.

That’s all about my journey.

I slept well in the night and went to office the next day. I wake up daily and my colleague will pick me up in the car and drop me in the evening. It has been 5 days in Cincinnati and I have not walked out of my room till now.

So how it is going to be here…Let me see!!

And…this is my 100th post. Great! congrats to me!!

Graph Theory

Vertex, Nodes and my MS degree

Graph theory is the only subject that holds me from completing my MS degree. Yesterday, I wrote this exam for the third time and I don’t think there is any chance to pass.

I have a very low internal (19/50), so I need 62 marks in external to clear this exam. In all my life time, I have not scored 60% in mathematics.

If I do not know an answer, I would create a new concept on my own 🙂 but that does not work with Graph theory.

The questions were not that complicated, but I was very disturbed with one particular question.

Three boys and four girls:

Though I knew all possible sets of guys who can marry one of their cousins, I was very much worried and had a deep concern about the girl who is single.  I tried hard, but at least one girl has to be left alone in the end. 😦

Marriage of the fourth girl is out of the scope in this question, still my mind started to think about the possibilities…

  • One of the guys have to marry one more cousin, but that is against moral.
  • I’m single, so I can marry the fourth girl, but I’m not her cousin.

The university should have come up with equal sets of boys and girls, so that every one would get married and the answer would have a Happy Ending. 🙂

The university is merciless to the fourth girl. At least will they show some kindness on my paper evaluation?

misterB’s day out

I took off from work yesterday and went for the movie John Carter. I enjoyed it well and I liked this advise from the hero.

Find a cause,

Fall in love,

Write a book.

– John Carter

Then we went for shopping at Skywalk and purchased a couple of dresses to wear at Onsite though my travel date is some time next month which is still not confirmed 😉

I clicked a few snaps…

Kites under the roof

It was nice to see the kites hanging atop the mall

Mr.Kite winker

Is this kite smiling at us ? 🙂

Partha, My friend

Partha and I watched movies and shopped many times in this mall, but we roamed through the mall like a first time visit 🙂

mister B, The kite runner 🙂

I don’t know how to pose and express properly. Stumbling smiles 😀

That was a perfect evening spent outside. Now I have to go office. Lot of work pending at my desk 🙂

Visa Approved

I just got my visa approved. My appointment was at 9 am and I reached there by 8.15.

These were the questions they asked during my personal appearance.

VO : What is your company name?

ME : I work with XYZ

VO : Where are going?

ME : I replied

VO : Who is your client?

ME : Said that in a word

VO : Where did you complete your School?

ME : I’m confused, I studied in more than three schools, So not sure what to tell, but before I reply he asked..

VO : I mean, your highest education?

ME : I replied.

That’s all, He said that my visa got approved!!

I said Good Day and left..

Finished with in a minute…I’m back home now and blogging 🙂

Again…Badly hit

Yesterday night,While returning home I had a self skid resulting in scratches on my left hand elbow and toe. Thank god that I was wearing helmet(I always do) other wise I would have ended up in severe injuries on my face and head. The worst part is, My friend Ram who sat behind also had injuries more than mine. I felt bad as I am responsible for the cause. Hope he will get well soon. We went to the nearest hospital and we have been told that we are clinically alright.

I called my colleague / friend Amar and he came immediately. Our agony flew away when he approached us with a SMILE and said ‘Dude, what happened’ :). It’s good to have friends who make things easy.

Last month I had some mild injuries and this one was the second incident. I have to be careful and avoid such events from happening again.

I understood one important thing from my yesterday’s fall. I was in lot of pressure for the past one month in work and I keep thinking about the next day’s work even after coming home. But after yesterday’s event, Nothing was in my mind other than my health. I’m taking leave for the next two days. My mind is totally free from pressure and I’m cool regardless of the pain 🙂

Great… That was a nice lesson…Work is not so important. It’s better to take a break when we are in pressure 🙂

Now I’m reading the book that I stopped a month ago. I’m cool and relaxed 🙂

Life is Beautiful !!

Auto driver and a Software Engineer

It’s a busy evening and I was in a hurry to catch my Bus. I stopped an auto. He asked 150 rupees and then agreed for 140 rupees to koyambedu from T Nagar. I’m not good in bargaining 🙂 so I nodded yes.

Since it’s a Friday evening, the city was full of traffic and the auto had to move inch by inch. He initiated the talk casually by asking which bus to catch, where I’m from etc.… and I answered him one by one.

Auto driver: What is your job?

Me: I’m a software Engineer

Auto driver: oh, are you an IT guy?

Yes, I replied.

Then came the interesting question…

Auto driver: What you guys do?

Me: We develop softwares.

What does that mean? He asked

I was not sure how to explain… then I told him that software is something that runs on hardware.

Say, You have a phone, that phone is a hardware and you need a software to interact with the hardware , to make calls and so and so.

Auto driver: Oh, So you can repair any kind of phones?

Me: No, No. I said that for an example. Just think about the past, we need to stand in a queue in the bank to deposit or withdraw money. But now a days we have ATM. Online transaction, ticket booking, these are all due to IT.

Auto driver: Hmm. I heard that all IT companies would cut down the salaries anytime. Is that true?

Me: Yes, if there is a recession. We may not get a hike this year.

Auto driver: Why, is recession approaching? Will they stop recruiting new people?

Me: Not really, they will recruit for sure. But hikes for us are not certain this year.

Auto driver:  You experienced people can strike for that?

Me: Strike? No. It’s a company’s rule/term. You may walk out and move for another job if you are not satisfied.

By the way, forming unions, groups and striking are not a healthy act.

Auto driver: Ok, You came in to this IT without knowing it?

Me: No, I came, because I’m interested. None of the jobs are secured.

Auto driver: But, it is a bit too much in IT industry.

I smiled.

Then we reached the bus stand. I got down and gave him 150 rupees. He said I don’t have a change.

I did not ask for it. I smiled.

He thanked and I left.

My Computers

I feel like writing something whenever I get up early. For some unknown reason I’m thinking about my old PCs and wanted to post a blog.

My first PC was a desktop bought somewhere in 2004-2005. I had to convince my Mom and Periyama very hard to get one for me. My Mom finally said ok and got me a PC with the help of my cousins Arun and Raj. The config was pretty decent. It had a Intel Celeron processor with 40 GB hdd and a 256 MB of RAM. I installed dual OS – Windows 98 and XP.

I’m not impressed with its performance, so a couple of months later I changed almost all the internal parts. I upgraded it with an AMD processor, gigabit motherboard, 80 GB hdd, 512 MB RAM and a DVD reader. The monitor and CPU case were the same. I spent more than 10,000 rupees from my mom’s wallet 🙂

Having that PC at home, I learned a lot of multimedia software but created nothing out of it 🙂 I used it to the core and experimented in all possible means. After 4-5 years it gave me lot of trouble and it was a burden for me to carry that desktop whenever I change my room. So I sold it for 4500 INR and I did own any computer for the next 1 year.

In 2009 I bought a HP laptop for 46000 INR. This one helped me find a university for my part-time post graduation. I sold it after 2 plus years of hard-core use and now I own a MacBook PRO. I’m planning to upgrade the RAM from 4 to 8 Gig.

I have this habit of upgrading /altering my computer like some people do it for their new bikes and cars 🙂

Everything we own and use will benefit us in some ways and brings change over the period of time!

New Year and My New MacBook Pro

This New Year I gifted myself a MacBook Pro. Buying a new mac wasn’t my resolution but it was my wish for a long time.

My 4 year old HP laptop gets pretty hot these days which made me to buy a new one. I was not satisfied with any of the PCs available in the market other than the MacBook Pro.

The only thing that objected me all these years in buying an Apple computer is its huge price. Then I figured out that its not just the money I’m lacking but the confidence and the guts to spend on what I like.

So I made up my mind just a day before the New Year 2012 and stepped out to nearby stores for enquiring. After a lot of thinking and comparison about the 13 and 15 inch MacBooks I finally chose the 15 inch.

In the morning of New Year’s day I went to temple with my friend (He had forced me to go with him 🙂 ) then I slept for few hours and in the evening I brought this pretty MacBook Pro home 🙂

It’s cool and awesome. Now for the next 6 moths, I need to pay the EMI dues for this thing of beauty 😦 🙂

Happy New Year !!

P.S : I sold my HP laptop for 11 k 🙂

Expenses in Chennai, Sky rocketing.

Its a monday morning and I left home early. I mostly don’t use my scooter for office. I used to catch an AC bus and then a share auto to office. It’s always tough to get a seat in the bus. But today it’s unusually free, I wondered and took a seat. When the conductor approached me I handed him 23 rs. He smiled and told me that the price was increased, I gave him extra 2 rs thinking that he asked for 25. He smiled again and said its actually 35 rs.
I was shocked. That’s really too much of money. Now I understood why the bus is super free 🙂
70 rs to and fro is really too much for a single day. My stop has come and I’m puzzled now on how much this auto guys will ask me ???@$

My daily expenses is increasing day by day.

Life at Chennai has become much more costlier.

HTC Post mango update

I got a Pop up saying there is a new update (Htc Update) for my wp7 two days back.

I eagerly updated to see what it actually has…and this is what I found… Nothing 🙂

I was expecting Internet Tethering but nothing was in it.

Now I wonder what the heck this update is about 😀
